A larger real reserve under slow discharge (6 Ah at C5) than the basic models — a good pick if the signal at your location is weak and the module draws more.

Why an AGM battery for the scale

The scale runs on 12 V and the battery is its only power source — there is rarely mains power at an apiary. That makes the battery type worth thinking about. AGM means the electrolyte is absorbed into a glass mat rather than sitting free as in a conventional battery. In practice:

• It cannot leak or evaporate — it can lie on its side or sit at an angle
• It needs no maintenance — no topping up with distilled water
• It stands up to vibration better — which matters when you move hives
• It self-discharges more slowly — so it lasts longer while the scale sits idle over winter

How long one charge lasts

That depends on the measuring interval and the strength of the GSM signal. At the factory setting of 60 minutes, a healthy battery comfortably carries the scale through a season. Where the signal is weak the module transmits at higher power and draws more, so a larger capacity is worth having.

Charging

Charge it with a charger intended for lead-acid batteries — ideally one with a maintenance stage, which tops the battery up without overcharging it. We carry two suitable chargers in the shop.
